The four passenger Piper Archer II (PA-28-181) is one of the most popular aircraft in its class. It offers great handling characteristics with a good load carrying capacity, cruise speed and interior space. It has a low operating cost due to it being a simple aircraft (fixed gear and fixed-pitch propeller), yet carries more than some retractable singles and cruises within a few knots of aircraft with larger engines and retractable gear. The Archer II has a 180 Hp engine which yields a cruise of about 125 knots (144 mph) on less than 10 gph. The Archer II is great for everything from a local scenic flight to serious cross country flying in instrument conditions and instrument flight training. It is not often used as a primary trainer.
